A Very Rare Early American Cruet (SOLD)
Richmond, VA, c. 1790, by William & George Richardson
Height: 9 1/2", Weight: 18 oz.

According to George Cutten’s Silversmiths of Virginia the brothers William and George Richardson were in partnership from about 1782 to 1795. “The firm seemed to have prospered if one can judge by the number of purchases of important real estate and the popularity of the older brother” (p. 156).

Eighteenth century American cruets are exceptionally rare. We know of four: one by John David of Philadelphia at Winterthur, one by Daniel Feuter at Deerfield and one by Myer Myers in a private collection. All of these are in the rococo style. We also know of one other example by the Richardsons, which is missing its bottles.
