Engraved with the arms of Andrew Mitchell of Edinburgh. Trained as a lawyer in London, Mitchell was appointed Under Secretary of State for Scotland in 1742, Envoy to Berlin in 1756, and finally Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the court of Frederick the Great of Prussia. For his diplomatic service there during the Seven Years War, he received the Order of the Bath.
