A James II Chinoiserie Tankard (SOLD)
London 1685 by Alexander Rood
Height: 7"; Weight: 36 ozs. 18 dwts.

This tankard is a great example of the Chinoiserie taste in English silver. It has all the massiveness one expects from the best Charles II silver, with very strong marks and crisp chasing. Its line of descent from 1768 through the end of the nineteenth century is traced in the engraving of subsequent coats of arms down the handle, showing that it has always been a prized possession. In this century, it was owned by one of America’s greatest collectors, J. Pierpont Morgan, and then by his family.
