A Superb George III Epergne (SOLD)
London, 1775 by Thomas Pitts
Height: 15 1/2"; Width: 18 1/4"; Weight: 166 ozs. 8 dwts.

Most of Pitts’s epergnes weigh between 110 and 120 ounces; this epergne is an astonishing 166 ounces, half again as heavy as normal. Such an extravagant use of metal is extremely unusual, particularly in the neoclassical period, when rolling mills were making silver thinner and thinner. Along with the enormous wine cistern (no. 03-22), this is one of the finest objects of neoclassical silver we have ever had.
