A Rare Set of Four Charles II Candlesticks (SOLD)
London, 1683, maker's mark: W
Height: 5 1/4", Weight: 43 oz.

Provenance: The Duke of Grafton, 1953; S.J. Shrubsole; Norman Woolworth; Pamela Combemale

These are among the earliest examples of cast silver candlesticks known in English silver, and are one of only about five known sets of four Charles II candlesticks.

According to Arthur Grimwade in (“Silver at Althorp,” Connoisseur, March 1963) a handful of other cast candlesticks are known from 1683 but no earlier examples have been found. He illustrates a virtually identical set of four candlesticks from that date which were made for the Duke of Marlborough when he was still an Earl. These still remain at Althorp, the home of the Earl Spencer.
