A Large William & Mary Tankard (SOLD)
London, 1691, maker’s mark: JS
Height: 8 1/2", Weight: 45 oz.

Provenance: Tessier's, London; Charles L. Poor

The arms are those of Boycott impaling Kirby with a mark of cadence for the second son. William Boycott of Boycott, co. Salop (b. 1661) married Sarah, sole daughter and heiress of Robert Kirby of Nottinghamshire, in 1692. The second son, William, was born in 1696 and was probably given this tankard at his christening the following year. He became a barrister at Lincoln's Inn and married Catherine, only daughter and heiress of John Warter, Esq., of Rudge Hall, co. Salop., which they inherited.
