Antique English Silver / 06_25 (scroll down to see image)A Pair of George III Soup Tureens (SOLD)London, 1768, by Sebastian & James Crespell Length: 17 1/4", Weight: 196 oz. These tureens were a gift from King George III and Queen Charlotte to George Fermor, 2nd Earl of Pomfret (1722-1785). They were probably presented when King George and Queen Charlotte visited the Fermor house at Sunbury in Middlesex in 1769. A contemporary newspaper remarks “On Saturday Her majesty honoured the Earl and Countess of Pomfret with a visit at their Seat at Sunbury, when they stayed from one to four o'clock, and were pleased to express their approbation at his Lordship's taste in his improvements there”. The Earl was an important member of the Royal household: he was a Lord of the Bedchamber 1736-1781 and Ranger of the Little Park at Windsor in 1763. Provenance: King George III and Queen Charlotte, to George Fermor, 2nd Earl of Pomfret (1722-1785), thence by descent to Lady Anna Fermor, eldest daughter of the 4th Earl of Pomfret. In 1846 she married Sir Thomas George Hesketh, 5th Bart, who by Royal License changed his name to Fermor-Hesketh in 1867. Thence by descent to Sir Thomas Alexander Fermor-Hesketh, 3rd Baron Hesketh. They remained at the family home, Easton Neston, until earlier this year. |
