The arms are those of Pennant with Warburton in pretense for Richard Pennant (c. 1737-1808), Baron Penrhyn, with an escutcheon of pretense for his wife Anne (1745-1816), daughter of General Hugh Warburton.Richard Pennant was a Liverpool merchant who founded his fortune on estates in Jamaica. He devoted most of his profits to developing the slate quarries of North Wales and the transportation links between those quarries and the newly established Port Penrhyn. His cousin, George Hay Dawkins (1764-1840), who inherited the estate following the death of Lady Penrhyn, became one of the most powerful landowners and the leading slate producer in North Wales.
