A Set of Four George III Candlesticks (SOLD)
London, 1769, by John Carter
Height: 10 1/4", Weight: 83 oz

Provenance: Stair & Co., New York, NY, 1942; Thomas E. Wynne (to his daughter); Mrs. Gaynor Wynne Richards

We bought these candlesticks from the auction of the collection of Thomas E. Wynne and Gaynor Wynne Richards. Here is part of the catalog entry discussing the collection, and these candlesticks in particular:

“This is a collection that grew from four candlesticks. Each evening, Mr. and Mrs. Wynne dined by candlelight using “attic antiques.” One day while window shopping in New York, the couple saw a particularly elegant set of four candlesticks that captured their hearts. However, the price was just beyond their budget. On each subsequent trip to the city they went by the store, hoping that the candlesticks would still be available. On the fourth such trip the candlesticks traveled home with Mr. Wynne. This love of beautiful antiques evolved into an entire collection including furniture as well as silver. The year was 1942.”
I love that catalog entry because it shows people slowly but surely surrounding themselves in their home with things they love and enjoy and that have been loved and enjoyed by generations before them. Not everything has to come from Crate and Barrel! Not all interiors have to look the same. Unique objects can quickly create an individuality and a hominess, where before the place had looked like a page from a mail-order catalog.

The shop in question was Stair and Company, whose upstairs neighbor at the time was S.J. Shrubsole. Mr. and Mrs. Wynne bought a few things from us over the years, and their collection, while not full of million dollar items, was a testament to their good and simple taste.
