Chalice   The goblet used to hold wine during the communion ceremony.
 
Chasing   The act of decorating silver using a hammer with punches and chisels. If the silver is hammered into high relief it is called "embossing". If the silver remains flat with just surface decoration is is called "flat chasing". Distinct from engraving where metal is removed.
 
Cypher   The initials or monogram of a person intertwined to become a decorative device. A variation of this is the "mirror cypher" in which the letters are doubled and one set is reversed (as in a mirror) before being combined.
 
Engraving   The act of decorating silver using a graver or scorper to cut away metal. Distinct from chasing where no metal is removed.

Silver-Gilt   Silver covered with a thin layer of gold. The French term for this is "vermeille".
 
William and Mary   Joint Rulers of England from 1689 to 1694. Following Mary's death, William carried on alone as King.
 
William III   King of England from 1694 until 1702.
 
William IV   King of England from 1830 to 1837.
